Our Costa Rica birding adventure is officially underway. We spent a pre-tour day at the hotel to adjust to the time difference and managed to photograph about 25 species right on the grounds, including this charming little owl. On the first official day of the tour, we spotted and photographed 65 species, featuring this same owl in an impressively spirited pose. We have encountered so many incredible species and captured so many great shots already. Stay tuned for more updates.
Day 5 of our Costa Rica birding expedition and we have already photographed 151 species. We have encountered so many incredible birds, including this remarkable, secretive Lesser Ground-Cuckoo. Its behavior reminds me of the other two species I have photographed; it calls and then moves like a ghost—approaching silently, but jumping into the trees to call again once it is alert. What an amazing day and a stunning bird. I am so grateful to our local guide for their expertise and for giving us a second chance to track down this bird.
On our way back to the hotel after a boat ride, our guide heard an owl calling. We rushed over with limited light and soon spotted this beautiful Black-and-white Owl perched right by the roadside. Such a stunning bird.
This is one of those common yet incredibly beautiful birds to photograph. On the second day of our tour, we managed to spot it twice, capturing lovely moments both times. It is now day seven, and we have photographed 206 species. As we begin the highland portion of the trip, we just successfully found the primary target for everyone on the tour: the Resplendent Quetzal. More to come soon.
We’re offering a special tour led by expert local guides to track down one of the region’s rarest owls. Our latest outing was a huge success—in just two hours, we spotted two mammals, one owl, and one nightjar. Although the owl was vocal, it remained shy and difficult to spot on the forest trails. Fortunately, through persistence and teamwork, almost everyone in the group managed to capture photos of it at different locations. Great effort by the whole team.
It was a freezing morning at around –6°C. We went to Napa Lake mainly to revisit some good memories from years ago. After waiting for a beautiful sunrise, I was almost ready to return to the car when I suddenly heard a bird calling very close by. The bird stayed low to the ground, barely moving—likely due to the cold—with ice clearly visible around it.
I managed to capture some close shots, and that moment became the happiest highlight of this casual, relaxing trip to Yunnan.
This bird was one of our trip’s main targets! We initially found one on its nest, but everyone was hoping to see its famous wing display. We decided to spend some extra time searching, and luckily, it didn’t take long to find another one. It put on a spectacular show, spreading its beautiful wings for us several times.
This was another primary target of our tour. We successfully located the bird on our first attempt in the evening, securing fantastic views and photos. Despite the initial success, the group wanted to visit a second site, which provided even better photographic opportunities for this spectacular species. With 8 days remaining, our photo count has reached 308 species, with many more to come.
Day 13, we photographed 351 species of bird and managed to have some very excited targets and few more days to go ..
it is one of very special look target of ours Costa Rica 2026 Birding our, we didn’t find one at first location and managed to got this bird at 2nd location almost immediate we start ours river cruise. Such a special look bird ..
This is the second Manakin species we have encountered, and watching its display was truly amazing. While we didn’t manage to record a video of the performance this time, we will try to share its unique calls and movements with you in the near future.
This species was one of our main targets. Although we couldn’t get close, it was a joy to watch it swimming around the same area for quite a while. It is a wonderful bird, though I truly hope to see it perched in the future.
With four days remaining, our count is currently at 360 species photograph. Everyone is feeling the exhaustion from the constant rain and trekking. I hope we all stay strong and healthy to push through these final four days.
Our Costa Rica trip is almost at its end, and we have photographed 34 species of hummingbirds. This particular bird made everyone very excited. We had hoped it would perch for a clear shot, but it only allowed us to capture it in flight. Our current count stands at 375 species photographed, with about 10 more seen but not caught on camera. Today is our final opportunity to add new species to our list, and we are hoping for the best.
We photographed nine owl species during this trip, and this pair was one of the easiest encounters — we had them almost immediately upon reaching the location. A local guide led us straight to the tree; he is also a talented local artist with an impressive collection of wildlife photographs and artworks available for sale.
We are now on the way back, rushing to the forests of Malaysia for another assignment. There may not be many opportunities to share photos from this trip, but I will try my best to post a few special highlights.
This bird keeps its distance from us. While there are one or two spots where Toucans visit feeders, the presence of bananas and papayas in the frame often makes the photos look unnatural. Because of this, most of us struggled to get a good shot until the last few days when this bird finally came down low for us at the forest edge. It was such an excitement for everyone to see this beautiful creature. Most importantly, thank you to everyone for prioritizing the bird’s well-being over the photo. You guys are the best.
This is a bird that sits at the top of everyone’s bucket list, but upon our arrival in Costa Rica, the local guides informed us they weren’t active. We had nearly given up hope and put this strange-looking species out of our minds. However, as we neared the site, we received an update that they were active again. We decided to take a chance. To our absolute surprise, after only a short walk, we found them. The view improved from twenty meters overhead to an incredible eye-level encounter just two meters away. It was the amazing feeling of a lost opportunity turned into a found treasure.
The rain was closing in, so we rushed to see this bird immediately after spotting the Crested Owl. Luck was on our side as we found another pair roosting together. We managed to see our Potoo right after this, just before the rain started. What an incredible day for everyone.
This is a truly unique falcon. It has a very fixed routine when leaving its nest. We visited twice, and it followed the exact same method and path both times. It is absolutely amazing to see. This was my first time learning that falcons can nest in tree holes.

update 202604
While some birders prefer solo outings, birding in a group can be a major advantage. While we were all focused on photographing a Great Curassow in the dense forest, Xin Hui spotted a smaller bird that everyone else had overlooked. Once I finished with the Curassow, I quickly helped the group locate this elusive find. It was such a thrill to hear everyone shouting “Where? There!” in excitement. Although this species is rarely seen, it wasn’t shy at all, moving slowly even with nine of us standing just a few meters away. Having fun companions really makes the experience.
After a wonderful morning, we skipped our rest to keep the momentum going. Our local guide, Raul, took us for some easier birding along a flat grassland trail. We were lucky enough to witness a Tropical Kingbird chasing a Gray Hawk, and we also spotted this stunning Yellow-throated Toucan. It was truly a fantastic moment.
This bird was at the top of my wish list, especially because I wanted to see its famous moonwalk display. We were fortunate to witness it at eye level in a pristine environment. Although we were at an excellent feeding station with great opportunities to photograph owls, toucans, and other species, we chose to skip those to focus on this Manakin. While we were on the jungle trail, heavy rain forced us to stop and wait in silence. Fortunately, the rain ceased after about ten minutes, and we immediately heard the bird calling from the exact spot where we had taken shelter. Shortly after, Raul signaled us over, and there it was. We had an incredible session capturing both video and photos of this amazing creature.
We photographed seven species of trogons at eye level and at close range during our birding trip in Costa Rica. It was truly incredible how each individual bird approached us and stayed long enough for everyone to get a great look. This particular bird was one of three trogons we captured in a single morning, making for a fantastic second day of our trip.
When we first spotted this bird high in the canopy, everyone captured hundreds of photos of this common yet stunning species. After a few days, however, most people lost interest regardless of how well it posed or how perfect the lighting was. I still make sure to capture it whenever a photo opportunity arises.
This is one of the bird families we have been hoping to see and photograph. We were fortunate to have several close encounters with them in the open, giving us wonderful opportunities for photos.

update 202602
We were just out for a casual walk when we heard a strange alert sound coming from the birds. It turned out to be some birds trying mobbing to this tiny owl! It perched quite low and stayed remarkably close while we were heading to lunch. Even though we weren’t specifically looking for owls today, who could possibly resist such a cute little thing?
We spent around 30 minutes listening to the Red-throated Barbet calling, but couldn’t get a clear view. Luckily, a few other species came in close, including this tiny and adorable owl!
Sometimes, there’s too much info on social media—but here’s my experience: I used the Canon R5 Mark II with full-area AF and animal eye detection. The owl was about 30 meters away, and paired with the RF 100-500mm, it locked onto the eye perfectly without hesitation. Highly recommend trying it out yourself!

This marks my final Malaysia tour for 2025, and once again, it came with its own unique challenges—just like 3 out of my last 4 tours.
This time, the guest had limited mobility, making it difficult to walk or even adjust position to look for our main targets. Despite that, luck was on our side. While simply sitting in a chair, this beautiful bird came in close and gave us a wonderful photo opportunity!

– a Barbet that not that common in Fraser Hill area, but it is show well for few days here. with the complex environment. The new CANON R5markii, full area focus found the bird almost immediate. I really like the R5markii … you ?
– one of my favorite birds of Malaysia, it is small, cute, active and lovely bird. It always moving with wing span open. But it almost invisible by naked eye.
– with the new canon Pre-continuous Shooting function, simple when see the bird stay still, half-press shutter .. and when see the wing open or move press the shutter .. than anything happen in before .5s will be record as raw into camera .. make this kind of picture simple
It’s a quiet afternoon without much happening, but we’re still on the hunt for our “6500” target. Shortly after arriving at a bamboo forest, three of them appeared within a minute, offering us this fantastic view.
– This is not a rare bird, but it is certainly one of the more challenging birds to spot in Malaysia.
– As the tour was coming to an end and we prepared to head back to town, we made a few stops for this bird. Shortly after, we were rewarded with an excellent view of a female.
– This small bird, commonly heard at Fraser’s Hill, Cameron Highlands, Sumatra’s Kerinci, and Genting Highlands, is often challenging to spot or photograph despite its frequent calls. However, at specific feeding spots, it tends to become tame and reliably appears when humans approach, displaying behavior similar to the Pygmy Cupwing. Notably, it often moves with its wings raised, making its behavior quite distinctive.
– With the new Canon R1’s Continuous Pre-recording feature, every time the bird perches, I half-press the shutter to keep it in focus. As soon as the bird moves or raises its wings, I fully press the shutter, capturing everything that occurred 0.5 seconds prior. This ensures I never miss the perfect moment.

update 202507
On day one, this bird was right on the railing—such an exciting moment (at least for me, and I hope for my guests too). It might not be the most eye-catching bird for everyone, but I still tried hard to get a good shot since it was such a great opportunity. Even though I’ve had two close, daytime encounters with it this year and got decent photos, I’m still thrilled every time I see this Peninsular Malaysia endemic.
What a surprise to encounter this bird twice during our stay at Fraser’s Hill! Despite the short trip and bad weather, we saw it once in extremely low light and again at midday, offering a much better view.
What a fantastic day at Fraser’s Hill—surrounded by stunning views and so many amazing birds! I missed capturing a few, but this tiny, colorful one couldn’t escape my lens.
It was so exciting to hear this just as we were leaving Fraser’s Hill. In our group, three of us are seriously working on seeing bird families around the world, and although we had three sightings during the tour, this one gave us the best view—perhaps even better than the one at Sungai Relau. Plus, I managed to get a photo of this one. Such a lovely bird!

update 202602
Day 2 of our tour was a major success, with most of our target goals achieved. A highlight was when a typically shy and hyperactive woodpecker approached us almost immediately, right as we spotted our Malayan Laughingthrush. It stayed low and close by for quite a while. Fast forward to Day 3, and the luck continues—another bird just perched right in front of us at eye level, only about 5 meters away.
What a lucky day! We started with a Sunda Cuckoo, then enjoyed a close-up view of the stunning Red-headed Trogon, and were soon treated to this surprisingly “tame” and active woodpecker. Everyone had fantastic views and managed great shots!

update 202604
It is our final day at Fraser’s Hill. Surprisingly, this bird appeared just a few meters away from us. It stayed at a perfect angle, allowing everyone to enjoy a wonderful view. It was a lucky moment for us all.
Like in my other sharings, I always enjoy showing what birding looks like today. There’s no absolute right or wrong way—whether it’s through feeding or simply walking, listening, and observing, the joy of birding is what matters. In this final sharing session, we came across this active and noisy bird—quite uncommon, especially to photograph!
It was a slow afternoon—so hot even at 5pm that bird activity was low. But this bird quietly approached and surprised us by showing up just 20–30 feet away! Sadly, it wasn’t in the best position for a good photo.
It’s a very common but still incredibly beautiful bird of Malaysia. However, because of its small size, it’s always a challenge to get a really good photo of it.
这是马来西亚非常常见但又很漂亮的一种鸟。不过因为体型小,总是很难拍到理想的照片。

update 202602
Starting the new year with a plan to revisit a wonderful destination. Sri Lanka’s birding is truly world-class. Looking back at my last visit, this bird was a constant companion; we heard it everywhere, and it was remarkably easy to photograph.
Brown thrush with bold dark spots on the underparts, white spots in the wings, and black facial stripes below the eye. Occurs in pairs or singly, on or near the ground, in forest, forest edge, and gardens, mostly in the Wet Zone, but also locally in the Dry Zone. No other thrush on Sri Lanka shows distinct rows of white spots on the wings, and bold spotting below. Gives very high-pitched “sweeeee” call; song is a highly variable collection of rich, rising and falling, melodious whistles and warbles. [ebird]

Gray-brown female has white streaks and prominent barring on its wings. Terrestrial, found in pairs or small groups in forests of lowlands and highlands over much of Sri Lanka. Generally keeps to cover. Only confusion is with domestic chicken; note lack of white at tail base, and yellow marking on comb of males, and bars in wings of females in Sri Lanka Junglefowl. Song a harsh “chyok-cher-chow”. Also stuttering “kik-kik-kik-kik” notes. [Ebird]

update 202602

Update 202504
It was a dramatic day — we missed our target in the morning and were caught in heavy rain by noon. Fortunately, the evening brought reasonably good birding. The next morning, however, turned out to be truly special. We had a great encounter with this bird as it flew back to its roosting site, and we managed to capture the moment perfectly without any issues.
It was another fantastic experience to see this bird again—even if just once—as it flew straight toward us. Not a particularly tough challenge for me with the R1: 98 frames in about 3 seconds, all perfectly in focus
– a not so common owl found Malaysia. Big size and with very vocal if found the correct one.
– I am making some nearby forest for trying the new CANON R1 to trying for AF lock on, AF tracking, Image Quality, Pre-capture … and trying again the in camera upscale. Found this bird roost at one of the Palm Oil plantation before strong sunlight come in, the bird sudden flying out to its’ roosting side.the R1 as expected captured most of the frame without any issue even with background change.

update 202511
Incredible to see that this bird still remembers me since my last visit in June—it’s just as tame and approachable as before. It perched around 6 meters above ground and stayed for 10–15 minutes, giving us a lovely session.
– it is almost not possible to miss this bird either day time or night time. me and my buddy+guests like owl and and woodpecker for start .. and this is very first owl we got and before we meet our “torch holder” (guide found us in the dark in the forest)
a owl we always heard and wanted to see in Borneo, even it can be different sub-species or species (in future) but It is much easier here .. a small owl like other small and active in dark
– even it is high chance to find it’s roosting bird, but we always like to find the bird in night. Ours’ first morning, have a good try and the bird didn’t make any sound… I am amaze how I found it (haha, by the thermal camera.. found it once very near and 2nd time quite a distance)
– as other Boobook, the bird small and making a lot of noise
– looking for owl always my birding trip target, we spent first night with see it flying and calling non stop at casual spot. But 2nd night managed to have it just road side.want to revisit … hope can plan .. anyone ?
A small brown owl with feathered ear tufts and yellow eyes, restricted to Lombok. Mostly brown with scattered white and pale markings on wings, sparsely streaked underparts, and a clear “double” facial disk with both blackish and white borders. Found in various forests and plantations in the lowlands and foothills. Distinctive: the only small owl on Lombok, and the only owl there with ear tufts. Gives a single note song, “woot,” ascending slightly at the end [Ebird]
This is one of our main targets for visiting Lombok Island. It didn’t take long to spot the bird, but we had to wait patiently for a better photo opportunity.
Although it’s a common owl on Lombok, getting a clean shot still required some effort—but it was worth it!

update 202412
This special, quick, and relaxed trip to Lombok, Indonesia, focused on our second main target. We spotted a few birds, but only one came reasonably close and perched low. It resembled other scops-owls, offering another great sighting enhanced by modern technology.
This has to be one of the cutest scops-owls I’ve ever encountered—endemic to the Banggai Islands. Its curious nature, constantly tilting its head while watching us, made the encounter even more delightful. Always a joy to see this charming little owl again!
Another endemic owl from Lore Lindu on our current Indonesia birding trip. This tiny species prefers to perch high and call frequently—thankfully, not too challenging to locate with a bit of patience.
202511, Lore Lindu National Park, Sulawesi, Indonesia
62. Sulawesi Masked-Owl, 苏拉仓鸮, 蘇拉威西蒼鴞, Tyto rosenbergii, Serak Sulawesi, セレベスメンフクロウ
update 202511
Not a lifer, but definitely a pleasant surprise! We were searching for another target when this lovely owl showed up. It stayed around for a while, giving us a great chance to enjoy and photograph it—always a joy to see.
One of the easiest and most rewarding night birding moments! This lovely endemic owl started calling right at dusk near the roadside. We didn’t have to wait long — just a short walk into the bushes, and there it was, perched and showing well for everyone. A truly special night encounter!
– small owlet like other owlet always like to be calling long at canopy and make other birds attention. But this endemic’s back of the owl simply awesome
– 与其他鸺鹠一样小小只。喜欢站高高,叫不停。可是这一只特有种背部很特别美。
update 20231211
– the bird just sit there !!! actually local make tree hole for them nesting so the area become territory of both bird… just look for them without call back or any action
Very small rufescent owl, with yellow-orange eyes, and sparse, light speckles on the underparts. Although does not possess true ear tufts it can show “false” ones when alert. Occurs within extensive humid rainforests in the lowlands of Wet Zone of Sri Lanka. Roosts singly or in pairs in the understory, but also found in upper levels of trees at night. Combination of small size, all rufous color, lack of prominent facial border, and only limited markings below separates it from all other owls on Sri Lanka. Song is a short “woOLoo”, rising in the middle. [Ebird]
– 被发现少于20年的斯里兰卡特有种。
update 20231222
– one of the bird I really want to see, we went same site for 2 days both day also not full open for picture but we had very good view of this very special endemic bird
Medium-sized owl with significant variation in plumage and vocalizations across its large range. Either gray or brown in coloration, with prominent pale ear tufts and pale face outlined in black. Fond of open wooded habitats from lowlands to foothills, often found roosting in temples, houses, and gardens, particularly in rural areas. Larger and more strongly tufted than both Oriental and Mountain Scops-Owls; both also lack the black facial border. Listen for this species’ incisive, short hoots, given at well-spaced intervals (often around 10 seconds). [Ebird]
It is quite a common bird, even in Malaysia. It was previously classified as the Sunda Scops-Owl but is now considered part of the Collared Scops-Owl. We often had one just outside our room, almost every day.
There is always debate about using torches or flashlights on birds, with no clear consensus on whether it is right or wrong for nature. However, there are certain actions we should never take or support, such as keeping them in cages or tying them up. It’s disheartening to know that many people still do such things, often just for the sake of a photograph.
This was one of my main targets for our Kenya birding trip, and I’m so glad we got it—our very first owl of the trip! As expected, it was sleeping during the day. Of course, we all wished for a shot with its eyes open or in a better pose, but I’m happy we chose not to disturb it just for a photo. Big thanks to my amazing team—you all are awesome!
On our way back to the hotel after a boat ride, our guide heard an owl calling. We rushed over with limited light and soon spotted this beautiful Black-and-white Owl perched right by the roadside. Such a stunning bird.
The rain was closing in, so we rushed to see this bird immediately after spotting the Crested Owl. Luck was on our side as we found another pair roosting together. We managed to see our Potoo right after this, just before the rain started. What an incredible day for everyone.
