CANON R3 with customisable frame rate bursts up to 195fps ..

a boring morning at mud beach, nothing special attract my attention, so I decided to try to shoot my CANON R3 with 195/120 fps and trying on new AngleBird AV Pro SE CFexpress B 1TB

I will continue to try post some direct RAW files browse view using FastRaw

1. AV mode
2. ISO 3200-6400
3. Animal detect and eye detection ON
4. Servo
5. customize 195 fps for 50 shots ot 120 fps for 50s
6. no pictures edit, just direct view the Raw files from the app

Lets have a look at first day samples …

the power of CANON R3 …

– we were looking at another flying squirrel flying like other tourist 10-20 minutes ago and while walking to the jungle for other subject. We saw some movement from far up and Nature guide point the “small torch” toward to the subject and shout “flying” .. what I did just point my camera to the sky and again #CANONR3 just lock focus and track the subject .. the picture may not best quality as it is shooting ISO16000 and picture is heavy under exposure.

(we don’t know flying behaviors before capture like nesting or some feeding spot)

– 我们刚看完大鼯鼠飞下。就向森林走去，我们的向导喊“飞”。没时间想，我立刻相机对上。对焦完全锁定，追焦几乎没错过。虽然画质一般，ISO16000 还要很暗（后期加光）。可是还是可以看到佳能R3的对焦+追焦的恐怖。（这个不是陷阱对焦是突然飞出来）

CANON R3 – AF tracking Tests [update 20230327]

I am putting my CANON R3 AF Tracking samples here

TEST3

a Black-naped Oriole flying around, make a simple test on this bird flying across various background. total 45 frames captured all 45 frames focus spot on.

We were waiting tide for waders, and this bird just flying infront of us, so immediate I point my setup toward this Collared Kingfisher.

Total 52 frames captured 4 frames bird disappear from viewfinder but immediate the bird appear. the Focus just continue .

Early morning before light coming in, this bird flying infront of us with noisy call. I manage to move my camera toward this bird and continuous follow and press shutter on this Kingfisher.

Total 98 frames captured and 100% focus lock on the bird.

CANON EOS R3 AF test4 : Heron flying across different Background | liewwk Nature

it is another series of picture captured while I am testing the CANON EOS R3

this bird sudden flying from sea toward mangrove, with the canon R3.. it is effortless just lock focus and track the bird even flying backlit BG and different BG

CANON EOS R3 AF test3 : Fast moving Swift | liewwk Nature

Spend another morning for test one of the most difficult photograph objects, swift and swallow.

*** I will updating all the swift AF test here.

There are some setting that I change for this fast moving object which I think it may affect the performance

CANON R3, CANON EF 500mm F4 IS2, EF 1.4x TC III

AF area (whole sensor)

AFC, eye-control AF off

Drive mode: H (15fps) and H+ (30fps)

AI Servo (AF-C)

cRAW and use DPP straight convert to JPEG and resize.

No CROP

Len set to >10m which anything near than 10m will not be focus

no feeding, no fix location/direction for the bird. Everything here just a bird flying and I just point my Len direction and lets the camera lock the focus (on bird) and track by following the flying direction

– can see below, the birds will flying crossing sky, water surface, green etc

– full screen focus area

– Subject to detect – animal

– eye detection – OFF

– cRAW, direct save from DPP (beta). without any process

– Handheld

– everything happen within ~1s

– each picture ~100% crop picture show..

– full screen focus area

– Hmode

– Subject tracking – ON

– eye detection – ON (may be need to be off for far object, while the DOF should cover the bird and most probably can get faster focus capability)

– cRAW, direct save from DPP (beta). without any process

– Tripod and video head

– everything happen within 2s

– each picture with 100% crop picture show..

CANON EOS R3 AF test2 | liewwk Nature

I am glad to given a chance to have a unit CANON EOS R3 to have a series of test on Birds/Nature Photography.

As for other camera, I plan to have series of tests which related to Tropical forest birds Photographer concerns eg. ISO performance, AF performance, Raw files dynamics range etc.

After days of basic understanding the camera (actually it is like a upgraded version of my old CANON EOS 1dxm2). I will try share other view of the camera later in other posts, here lets share one of the major concern : AF performance.

For this test, I am using

CANON EOS R3

CANON EF 500mm F4 IS2

CANON 1.4x TC III

No feeding, No nesting and no idea what bird flying to/from which directions. Just base on what you see and trying the Camera capability to focus and capture.
