update 202601
It was a long but rewarding day! We spent the first half at a fantastic Malayan Banded Pitta hide, enjoying views of fresh plumage on the pitta and lots of other great birds that came by. In the evening, we decided to try for this special nightjar—perfect timing to put my favorite lens, the Canon RF 400mm F2.8, to use. Even after sunset in very dim light, the fast F2.8 telephoto and the Canon R6 Mark III tracked almost every frame of the bird in flight, with beautiful dusk light in the background. Really loving how it handled this challenging shot!

update 202505
After a long wait in the heavy rain at dusk, this bird finally appeared silently. I couldn’t help but shout, “Malaysian Eared-Nightjar!” and managed to capture it using a very high ISO of #ISO51200. Despite the challenging conditions, it’s still great to see details of its back and chest.

– a Sulawesi endemic

A long-tailed, boldly patterned nightjar with extensive gray markings on the upperparts, bold buff, black, and white markings, and a white throat. In flight, shows prominent white patches on outer wings and tail. Inhabits lowland forest, edge, scrub, and mangroves. Confined to Sulawesi and the Sula islands. Distinguished from the montane Diabolical Nightjar by its lowland habitat, paler plumage, extensive white in tail, and lack of a buff collar. Tail is longer than Savanna Nightjar’s. Gives a distinctive, explosive “tok-tok-toktrrtrr” call that speeds up, then decreases in volume at the end. [Ebird]

This bird is endemic to Papua Island, and unlike some species that require long waits, this one was a quick and lucky tick! It perched right where we wanted—such a satisfying moment.
