Nectariniidae series: Spiderhunter | 太阳鸟科: 捕蛛鸟 | liewwk Nature – 10 [update 20251012]

The spiderhunters are birds of the genus Arachnothera, part of the sunbird family Nectariniidae.
The genus contains eleven species found in the forests of south and
southeastern Asia. They are large representatives of the sunbird family,
with drab plumage and long strongly curved bills. They feed on both
nectar and a range of small arthropods.

It was a quick visit to check on the flowers while meeting a few friends. Within an hour, the bird appeared twice, giving me the perfect chance to capture its flight using the R1 Continuous Pre-record mode. It worked perfectly!

Over the years, by understanding what the bird feeds on, it has gone from being difficult to spot to becoming a fairly common sight today.

Throat iridescent reddish-purple in most of range, but blueish in the north Moluccas and Kai islands. Female is nondescript, with a grayish head, white throat, olive upperparts, and yellowish underparts over much of range. In the south Moluccas and Aru islands, underparts are grayish. Juvenile resembles female, but yellower on throat. Inhabits forest edge, open forest, gardens, and scrub in lowlands and hills. Male can be separated from dark-bellied forms of male Olive-backed Sunbird by glossy, iridescent crown and black back. Females differ from Olive-backed Sunbird by absence of eyebrow, absence of white tail tip, white throat, grayish head, and duller yellow underparts. Females lack eye-ring, unlike larger female Brown-throated Sunbird, and are less uniform underneath than female Elegant Sunbird. [EBird]

Breeding male is unmistakable: bright green with a long tail. Non-breeding male is duller but usually still shows some iridescent green and an elongated tail. Female is a big, dull sunbird with a long bill. Found in fynbos, moorland, grassland, scrub, and exotic tree plantations. Restricted to high elevations except in South Africa, where it occurs down to sea level. Song consists of “tyep” notes and emphatic rattles. Female similar to female Bronze Sunbird but larger, duller below, and with a fainter eyebrow. [Ebird]

During our first few days near Sani Pass, this was one bird that caught our attention every time we saw it. Its bright metallic green plumage and long tail were mesmerizing (we even saw it displaying to attract a female). Among the many sunbirds we encountered, this one truly stood out as exceptionally beautiful.

Day 1 of our Kenya birding tour, and this was the fifth bird we photograph. It was incredibly close, completely ignoring our presence while feeding calmly on flowers near the ground. So far on this trip, we have photographed three different long-tailed sunbird species, a very rewarding start to the tour.

– very lucky moment while everyone just got the eye level of Trogon, this bird just not far from the Trogon. But I am not happy with some foreign photographers with us… we found the Trogon and stand at best position for the view but another group of Photographers lead by other Guide just stand infront of us when they saw us looking at the bushes … and I actually told them they blocking us .. but they just ignore us !!!!! please be polite and considerate ..

What a surprise to spot this species here! Although not the first time, it’s still quite rare to see them in this area. Even better, they were feeding very close to us—right at eye level—giving us a great photography opportunity.

A noisy flock too, making their presence known and helping us locate them easily!

– when we had last hour and glad everyone never gave up and spent last moment to hike up to a small mountain after rain and “Bingo” after everyone see the Eyebrowed Wren-Babbler. Good view and long enough for almost everyone a good view.

The Sultan Tit (Melanochlora sultanea) is a large songbird (about 17 cm long) with a yellow crest, dark bill,
black upperparts plumage and yellow underparts. The sexes are similar.
The female has greenish black upperparts and yellowish throat. The young
bird is duller than the adult and has a shorter crest. It is the only
member of the monotypic genus Melanochlora, which is fairly distinct from the Parus tits with the nearest relative being the monotypic Sylviparus.^[5]

黄颊山雀（学名：Parus spilonotus）小型鸟类，体长12~14厘米。头顶和羽冠黑色，前额、眼先、头侧和枕鲜黄色，眼后有一黑纹。上背黄绿色、羽缘黑色，下背绿灰色（西藏亚种），或上背黑色而具蓝灰色轴纹，下背蓝灰色（华南亚种）。颏、喉、胸黑色并沿腹中部延伸至尾下覆羽，形成一条宽阔的黑色纵带，纵带两侧为黄绿色（西藏亚种）或蓝灰色（华南亚种）。

相似种绿背山雀头无羽冠，脸白色；黄腹山雀脸白色，下体无黑色纵带。区别甚明显，野外不难识别。

常见于中国西藏南部及云南极西部（指名亚种）和南方省份（华南亚种）的开阔林，高可至海拔2400米。

We decided to walk along the boardwalk instead of taking a boat ride. While strolling, this bird came surprisingly close to us. I quickly opened my bag, grabbed the Canon RF100–500, and managed to capture this cute little bird.

Size distinguishes this species from other niltavas; coloration is quite similar to Large Niltava, which is double the size. Male Small Niltava is bright blue with the brightest patches on the shoulder and forehead. Female is brown with a white eyering and a rufous tail and wingtips. Forages in the lower and middle levels of hilly and montane forests, usually singly. Listen for its distinctive song, a cleanly descending “wee-dee-dee.” [EBird]

Another bird we encountered, found only at a single hide despite visiting many others, initially appeared quite shy. However, after a few hours of brief appearances, it gradually became more comfortable and eventually stayed long enough for some great photos.

It’s a busy start to the year! We kicked things off with a very long drive due to the holiday traffic, followed by a specialized photography tour with two lovely and incredibly patient guests. One of our main targets for this trip was this beauty—it’s a shame they’re still a bit shy this season, but what a wonderful bird to start off 2026.

今年年初非常忙碌。由于长假期间交通拥堵，我们先是经历了一段长时间的旅程，随后便与两位亲切且极具耐心的客人开启了专项寻鸟之旅。这是我们此行的主要目标之一，可惜在这个季节它们还是有些害羞，但能以这么优美的鸟儿开启2026年，真的非常美好。

This was a truly special tour for us, focusing on a very important target species. After two days of only hearing it without any sighting, we finally had an amazing view—right in front of the four of us, and even calling!

Such a memorable family trip—got all three special bird families: Rail-Babbler, Crested Jayshrike, and Bornean Bristlehead, all with photos too!

Just another moment captured with this beautiful yet shy bird. I’m accustomed to situations where people alter the environment—making it brighter and more open—just for the sake of photos, which can affect the bird’s natural behavior. However, that doesn’t diminish my happiness, especially with my birding buddy back in action after finally deciding to get his 400mm F2.8 following a slowdown in birding. Exciting times ahead, as I have more personal birding trips coming up soon!

– it is a tough day, been assign with a 1.5 days (actually just one day for Rail-babbler as main target). After meet Hermina & Shannon, they really keen to see the Rail-babbler… so we make a early move and have a long coffee stop before we go into forest due to some early morning rain. Immediate arrive the area, after got 1 frogmouth calling, and sight the Banded Woodpecker. I heard the Rail-babbler calling, immediate trying to track it down and we spit the bird less than 10 minutes … ring my buddy and hope he is happy man now ..

– 接受了一项几乎是不可能任务，1天时间看白眉长颈鸫。与两名客人交谈后，虽然她们都没来过马来西亚。可是还是觉得要用时间看这目标鸟。一大早下了场小雨，我们吃了进林子。到了没太久，竟然还听到蟆口鸱叫。。。虽然找了一会还是放弃，因为听到白眉长颈鸫叫。找了10多分钟，竟然找到了。。。。。幸运啊

– it is a long plan request from “friend”, a bird family need Rail-Babbler… last for him and another Jay-shrike for better view .. and we make this happen within 2 days while we actually plan it for 5 days … day1 arrive afternoon nothing much but still got Finsch’s Bulbul & Scarlet-breasted Flowerpeckeras new birds and with many woodpeckers with good view … follow by lunch and a quite bored afternoon … but still able to have good view of Crested Jayshrike and ~10m close Rail-babbler without any sight …Day2 morning nothing much even with some good view but no Rail-babbler close heard .. raining afternoon after lunch even still rain.. as Bill seem worry we missed the bird just decided walk into forest with raining gear … not far after we walk I heard “to to to” real close and ask every one backward … YES me and Bill saw the bird circling and walk across the trail but Karen & Miki missed … hmmmmmm .. so we decided go to a slight open space to wit for the bird…. not that long the bird came into view and making “balloon” call show for us more than 2 minutes .. smile for everyone …

– 去年有位朋友的介绍下，他们要求“我”带他们（其中一位）看完最后一只鸟科类。。。他已80岁希望可以看完。。加上某种原因，我决定帮这个忙。等了一年，终于到了。。。很快第一天我们到中午时分，没什么特别可是。都拿下芬氏冠鹎（新鸟种）加蛮多啄木鸟（很低）。。吃完饭后，虽然拿下不少鸟。加上冠鸦（之前他只看到一秒，其他人的新鸟种）。

第二天，早上虽然也不少鸟。可是目标鸟几乎没声音。吃饭时Bill 开始担心，虽然下雨他特别忧心。我也决定还是到森林等。到时还是小雨，决定进去走走。大家带着雨伞，雨衣进去。没很远，大家在看什么什么鹎时。我听到”它“叫了。。。很近。就叫大家后退。。。。没2分钟就看到它在步道旁走了2圈。还过了步道，可是2位朋友没看到。。。hmmmmmm..我们早到附近一个空荡的第在哪等待。。也没很久“它”尽然上小树桩上脚了好几分钟。天啊。当然大家都笑了。我帮了一位老人完了他的心愿。（他来了这8-9次）

One of our guests’ top targets! While we don’t have a specific spot for this bird, we were lucky enough to spot it twice during our 8-day trip. This particular one perched just a meter away, staring right back at us.

A bulky black shrike with scattered white patches on the shoulders and wings and a very long, floppy tail. The sexes have differently colored flanks: females white, males black. Small groups of 3 to 10 sit upright on perches 1 to 5 meters high in grassy open savanna and sparse broadleaf woodland. Perch-and-wait predators, they drop onto insect and small vertebrate prey, and often move locally into recently burned areas to forage. The species gives a shrill starling- or parrot-like “pleeee-eouuu,” often produced by more than one bird at once, and also gives harsh grating cries. [Ebird]

Fairly common throughout Kruger National Park, this bird is typically seen moving in groups. Its black-and-white plumage and long tail make it unmistakable. I was fortunate to witness a partridge attempting to scare it off and managed to capture a shot of it flying away.

It was quite a stressful morning as we missed the Trogon twice, and the male Black-sided Flowerpecker didn’t show up. However, this bird flew close, giving me a chance to capture it in flight. What a beautiful sight!

This is one of the shy birds found here. Compared to the Bornean version—which lacks the white wing patch and is generally more tolerant of humans—this one tends to keep its distance.

A lucky morning with four birds coming in close—one of them even perched right at eye level for us!

在这里比较害羞的一种鸟类。相比婆罗洲的版本（没有白色翼斑，也不太怕人），这只明显更害羞一些。

It’s a noisy bird, but I always enjoy seeing it. It gives us great opportunities for photography, even though it’s just a plain black bird and not particularly striking. Its unique actions—like calling while moving its head up and down—make for special photo moments.

During a brief visit to RDC, we were scanning for birds to photograph when this one approached, making a noisy call. Suddenly, it flew toward us. Without hesitation, I pressed the shutter. Despite the low light in the forest and the high ISO, it still tracked well.

This is a very common crow in Sulawesi, recently split from the Slender-billed Crow. With its new status as a separate species and a Sulawesi endemic, I made an extra effort on this trip to get better photos of it.

Still, it remains one of Indonesia’s remarkable country endemics — a true highlight despite the effort!

101. Ashy Drongo, 灰卷尾, Dicrurus leucophaeus, ハイイロオウチュウ

A slim, medium-sized drongo with bright red eyes and gray plumage that is almost black in the western parts of its range and quite pale in the eastern parts of its range; eastern birds also often have an oval-shaped pale facial patch. It has a long slim tail with a deep fork. Common in wooded habitats where it sallies for insects and aggressively chases other birds that may compete for food or nectar. Most birds migrate south every winter. Similar to Black Drongo, but slimmer and usually in different habitats. Calls include harsh and sweet notes, and can mimic some bird species poorly. [Ebird]

It is noticeably larger than the Ashy Drongo found in Malaysia. We were fortunate to spot it catching a wasp (recently, I got stung by a wasp in Sumatra—glad this bird took care of one for me… just joking!). This bird is quite common at Baihualing and can be seen from several different hides.
