simple test for the 5Dsr for shadow recovery , it is 3 stops under and recover with 3 stops + shadow recovery

ORIGINAL picture

original under exposure picture ~3-4stops

and we will recover as below under ACR without any noise reduction

and another camera shooting normal exposure (close to what we recover)

100% crop of the camera shoot correct exposure vs recover picture

recovery picture 100% crop without noise reduction

recovery picture 100% crop with noise reduction

– the shadow recovery seem to be working good even ~3-4 stops under .. and the picture show without any noise reduction except last picture with noise reduction “10” @ACR

– picture all open and process only at ACR 9.1

– from the almost total dark picture , the picture able to recover without many color noise, and with a lot of details on the object …

CANON EOS 5DSR vs 5Dm3

a simple indoor test among CANON EOS 5Dsr vs 5Dm3 with CANON EF 24-70 F2.8 mark2 …

all shot simple

** ISO 100,200,400,800,1600,3200,6400

I pick few 100% and 200% on different location to compare the different between both picture

#1 200% crop on both pictures of ISO100 , the one with 5dsr still can see the monitor model but not the 5dm3

#2 180% crop on 5dsr on the RIGHT most RM10 ringgit note .. “BANK NEGARA” still able to be see but the 250% crop or even smaller crop cannot be see clearly with 5dm3 picture

I am glad that I have chance to test on this len CANON EF 400mm F4 DO IS 2 … I am here just share some actual test result but not compare to other len … except some simple physical compare to my usual tele len CANON EF 500mm F4 IS2 …

*** ALL PICTURE use basic RAW–>JPEG with ACR

– no noise reduction

– default sharpen

– default exposure

– default Shadow/Highlight

CONCLUSION from basic test in low light condition :

1. AF speed is FAST and as good as my 500mm F4 IS2

2. from the picture and more test result , it is sharp and without any weird bokeh appear

3. the size and weight real small and light (about 700gram different with 500mm F4 IS2)

4. easily handheld 😀

Birding with Circular polarizer on Telephoto lenses … why ?

I like to use CPL on my landscape, and I ask myself do I need one for my birding and based on my understanding … I MUST have one 😀 … and I bought one for test …. (results from last years testing and now only I have time to share this)

beside getting better reflection … I seldom do wader photography … so not rally have test result … but I found it is very useful in the forest ….

let’s picture tell the story

we always have reflective leafs create “white spots” that we really hate to have .. e.g.

without CPL and Background reflective leafs create white spots

that I add in CPL and reduce the flare direction

with CPL rotate it to minimum flare ... the white spot gone :D — with CPL rotate it to minimum flare … the white spot gone 😀

I am using Taiwan design hide for years , and I loving it due to the Ventilation is good even without expose us (open the center opening for better ventilation) …

without open the center opening big we still look outside the hide and with better Ventilation

HAIDA ND filters

neutral density filter or ND filter is filter reduce light going to the sensor … so create slower shutter speed …. (normaly what we want) .

previously I only pick Lee Filter ND filters for my photography use as the color cast is minimum and best in the market …. recently many brands come out with their filters (square, screw in .. etc ) and some of them give very acceptable color cast and very good value of money … one of them I test is HAIDA …

based on first test few months back, I found HAIDA ND filters giving warmer cast and Lee actually giving colder cast …. but both are very acceptable and very easy to correct if we want to do so …

below are simple capture

– same ISO, same focus and spot area

– Auto White balance

– AV mode

– timer and all shooting continuously one after another

– direct raw-jpeg from DPP

from simple capture above , we can see the cast are minimum for both … whether slight warmer or colder than depend on personal preference …

Canon EOS 7d mark2 Video AF tracking

I was lucky to have this camera (CANON EOS 7d m2) test for a day in forest (Sepilok RDC) .. there are few things (ISO performance, AF performance, Video AF tracking, Image Quality, mirror shake level) that concern me and I had make full test on it …….

Below are some of my test result (all based on my personal standard)

1. ISO performance is improve and acceptable up to 1250 (from screen) compare to my 1dx 2000

2. AF performance is very fast

3. shutter/mirror shake is very quiet and minimal

4. liveview AF tracking is simply amazing

– below show the tree branch under strong wind and keep shaking frontward-backward, left-right.

Test : CANON EF 500mm F4 IS2 with 2x TC picture quality

[this is not a test to compare among brands … just a plain test on tc effect]

many years back before I upgrade to Canon mark2 tele lenses … I always try to avoid tele-convertor 2x … max I used is 1.4x but than still minimum use due to the quality drop is too much to worry ..

since then I upgrade to CANON ef 500/600 F4 IS2 and tc 1.4x and 2x mark3 … I have my own rule to apply the tc to get my acceptable quality picture .. and here I would share some of my capture (and I am not trying to share 1-2 case picture .. pictures sharing here are based on my common standard of shooting result) …

to make good use of the TC mark3 version .. my own rules

– enough light condition.. I can make use of any TC either 1.4 or 2x

– low light condition , try to avoid 2x tc

– very bad light condition , no TC will be use and use crop picture for final output

Update 2014 April 20 :

Orange-Breasted Trogon 橙胸咬鵑

– when the quality of air consist of moisture/mist … we can see it affect the quality (this also apply without TC)

Common Kingfisher

100% crop

both pictures above shooting on bean beg , ISO1600 , with only resize and no Post Processing done …

– for me the result is far acceptable for using the 2xtc …
