finally on hand with production Canon EOS R5 for 2 days. managed to test standard function, ISO performance, Raw file capability (Shadow and highlight recovery) and AF : Animal eye tracking on birds
For wildlife Photographers, few things about AF bordeing us : AF speed, AF accuracy, AF tracking capability
*** yet to have time setup screen capture to show the R5 AF capability and hope I can make one to show
for the 2 days bird photography with the R5
Day1 : standard shooting experience, Handheld IS capability , ISO, Shadow and Highlight recovery
Day2 : I shooting Tv mode , Full Animal eye tracking
Here, I will sharing real Tropical forest field experience on using the R5 … few simple conclusions before start some sharing
1. the AF to lock the object
i. normal condition – EOS 1Dx m2 definitely faster and R5 is faster than my 5D mark4
ii. low light condition – EOS1Dx m2 faster , R5 is good compare to 5Dmark4
iii. back light condition with shadow highlight backgroup (not just pure sky)
– EOS1Dx m2 faster, 5Dm4 slow but R5 seem can’t really look for the object (small object on the overall frame) . the R5 just can’t get the lizard or the trunk nearby to focus for long (and I am still looking single button to change AF to MF peaking to solve this easy .
2.
2. Animal Finding — > Eye Tracking
– I was amaze by A9 with 600mm FE year back where my guest using it to find the the bird !!! As long as we point the camera and len toward bird direction with some minor complex object (with pure sky there are no problem at all) the A9 will automatic found the bird and keep tracking it !!!!!
so I also try to use R5 , I know where is the bird and point R5 with EF-R adapter 500mm EF IS4 II toward the direction . the Camera did found the tiny flowerpecker if it move/jump but it stay and just moving it’s body .. I still can’t depend the R5 help me find where’s the bird yet …
Trac#
Tracking : this TOTALY change my thought of Mirrorless camera !!!!
As long as I can find , focus the bird (use shutter button focus the bird) than I use the AF-on (configure to Animal eye focus) it will track the bird head/eye in any conditions : dark, backlight, moving, flying small object etc
Even, the Green Iora is far and small in this case. After I got the bird focus and press AF-On button, the eye tracking just work seamless (no matter it change head direction, jumping etc)
#
situation where birds flying with plain sky … it is incredible fast to get the camera to focus on the bird .. as long shutter speed fast enough , shooting swiftlet is like “makan kacang putih” (Malaysian say) …. picture below .. point my camera and len toward sky with any bird , and press the AF-On button which is Animal-eye tracking than within very short moment it will lock the bird and fire shutter ….
#
We always do have problem shooting bird in flight when bird flying toward us with speed . the AF not easy to lock the object firmly , even yes we need luck , high skill (camera and tripod handling) to have higher success rate for Bird in Flight toward us .. which is different from side way flying which many way can make higher success rate
Very lucky day, we have this Owl for us to try the animal-eye tracking AF … with condition
– bird flying from about 200m toward us about 20-30m toward us and than to right
– Canon EOS R5, R-EF adapter , Canon 600mm F4 IS2
– Tv mode set to Auto ISO, 1/2000
– This test , using single focus get the bird focus when it flying toward us than using Animal-eye tracking for full sequence shooting of ~3s
– Mechanical shutter
– among 29 frame pictures captured , only 1 frame missed and 1 not capture correct (due to moving my camera slower than the bird flying)
simple video show how each the bird flying toward us
each frame as below 2048px

– medium size tern, non-breeding plumage sometimes confuse with Whiskered Tern. Obvious “headset” on head
update 202110
– lucky to see many of them feeding on paddy field, with new Canon EOS R3. It is so easy to photograph tern flying over various backgroup (especially green background which previously most the camera facing lost focus when bird sudden flying to green background. R3 think solve the problem even I still have 10-20% focus the wing instead bird head/eye .. but this could due to the wing flip block the bird head/eye so the camera just focus to the wing. Somehow it is much better than focus to the background instead the bird.
A yearly event, we have our yearly Hornbill Expedition trip to Belum-Temengor even the Covid-19 lock down but we make it short instead, where we just spend 1.5 days boat ride and 2 morning at Titiwangsa Rest area (which is ~30km from Belum jetty).
This forest believe to be older than 130 million years, due to the lake crossing the main forest make it an open area for hornbill seeing good spot … it is always to better chance to spot all 10 hornbills of Malaysia here within few days of birding trip.
As usual, our main target is Plain-pouched hornbill which believe peak season Aug-Sept every year.. easily spot them in big flocks flying on skyline here.
Sometime, birding here can be depressing, birds can be far !!!! not even able to ID without photo record as only using binocular ….
#
##############
But it is always good place to capture some Bird in flight due to open area and with some distance .. (for photographers, we need little bit luck and patient to have birds nearer and flying)

here is the main target for the trip, Plain-pouched hornbill. It look almost identical like Wreathed Hornbill except
lack of grooves on bill
small size
lack of a black patch on the pouch

There are a group

Female is gray, with red confined to rump; this color patterning is diagnostic. Juvenile resembles female, but lacks the red rump. Singles or pairs inhabit the upper reaches of hill and montane forest and forest edges. Restricted to Sulawesi. Gives thin, high-pitched “tzeet” and “kwit” call notes. – a special tour to North for one of the vagrant that visit Malaysia (Black-faced Spoonbill). After got our target, and spend some time for the beautiful mudflat and one of the star found is this long-billed, overall dark curlew.
– waiting for long as both bird roost with head down. After a long wait finally got both show their bill for comparison. – the Far Eastern Curlew is rare here compare to Eurasian – Far Eastern overall look darker (rufous) both upper rump and underpart tail don’t have “white”. When flying the underpart wing will show more pattern instead of mostly white for Eurasian.
– lucky to have a single bird mix up with Eurasian Curlew which easy to tell the overall look darker rufous and without white rump

– 与非繁殖羽小滨鹬不容易分辨。黑脚。与小滨鹬分别:头较大。脚较短。嘴较细尖。

update 202105
– medium size, here sometimes can confuse with Great Knot which is bigger, longer bill. Breeding Plumage lack of orange
– one of the lucky days while looking at a group of ~50 Great Knot. all of sudden, a reddish similar knot found and it is the shorter bill, smaller in size. Summer plumage shows their differences too.
– 4 月的幸運天。忽然發現這繁殖羽的稀有候鳥(吉隆坡)
#
– when 2 stand together is easier to tell the Red Knot is smaller in size, shorter bill. But when both on breeding plumage then it is much easier. – very lucky day to have both breeding plumage stand together.
25. Asian Dowitcher, 半蹼鹬, 半蹼鷸, Limnodromus semipalmatus, シベリアオオハシシギ, KEDIDI-TETIRUK ASIA
– a medium size wader
Very uncommon large, long-billed shorebird, nearly the size of a godwit, found in coastal mudflats and open marshes. Breeding adult extensively brick-red below, dark and strongly marked with brick-red tones above. Nonbreeding adult grayish brown with a duller, browner bill. Juvenile dark above, with broad gold feather edges, pale below, washed with warm buff or gold tones and with neat dark stipples and chevron-shaped marks. Blackish legs distinguish Asian from Long-billed Dowitcher, which has yellowish-green legs. Blackish or brownish bill of adult Asian differs from bicolored bill of godwits; note that bill of juvenile Asian has pale base. (Ebird)
Critically endangered, highly distinctive stint with spatulate bill tip that can be difficult to spot at a distance when held in profile. A coastal mudflat specialist, it stays close to wet and muddy areas near or in water, unlike Red-necked Stint, which often feeds in much drier areas. Breeding adults have a rusty head that resembles that of Red-necked, but the head tends to be darker and the rusty color extends farther down the breast. Nonbreeding adults and juveniles lack the rusty head, have prominent fine stripes on the crown, dark ear patch, and are overall paler than Red-necked. Flight call a soft “prreee.” [Ebird]

1. 1.4 crop (mean 500mm Canon F4 IS2, I got ~710mm and biggest aperture F2.8)
2. one stop bigger aperture
3. lost len Image stabiliser
4. AFC hunting, AFH is not working at all
5. either TC (CANON, PANASONIC) is not working (but tested on Olympus camera, it is working but very slow AF)
6. AF speed almost same like my G9 + LEICA 200mm F2.8 (almost not noticeable different)
