I was lucky to have this camera (CANON EOS 7d m2) test for a day in forest (Sepilok RDC) .. there are few things (ISO performance, AF performance, Video AF tracking, Image Quality, mirror shake level) that concern me and I had make full test on it …….
Below are some of my test result (all based on my personal standard)
1. ISO performance is improve and acceptable up to 1250 (from screen) compare to my 1dx 2000
2. AF performance is very fast
3. shutter/mirror shake is very quiet and minimal
4. liveview AF tracking is simply amazing
– below show the tree branch under strong wind and keep shaking frontward-backward, left-right.
pitta – a bird normally long leg, short tailed, hopping around on forest floor for food , shy ….
many of the bird photographers just enjoy this bird very much and spend years, months, days, hours .. stay inside hide just to view, photograph this forest gem ..

– very common in Sumba Island but very beautiful Fantail and as usual very active ..

It is a fairly common species found in Bali, Sumba, and Lombok, but this beautiful fantail is truly captivating. We were searching for the Five-colored Munia, but this bird appeared just before we could get a good look at the munia.
1. Oriental Pratincole, 普通燕鸻, 普通燕鴴, Glareola maldivarum, ツバメチドリ, KEDIDI-PADANG BIASA
– a bird always rest on the ground .. nest on the ground … not too shy to human
– Adults are brown overall with an elegant black necklace and pale yellow throat. When in flight, note dark flight feathers, chestnut underwing coverts, bright-white trailing edge to the wings, and a flashing white rump. (ebird)

2. Small Pratincole, 灰燕鸻, 灰燕鴴, Glareola lactea, ヒメツバメチドリ, KEDIDI-PADANG KECIL
– a smaller brownish bird, white eye ring, short bill
– This small bird, commonly heard at Fraser’s Hill, Cameron Highlands, Sumatra’s Kerinci, and Genting Highlands, is often challenging to spot or photograph despite its frequent calls. However, at specific feeding spots, it tends to become tame and reliably appears when humans approach, displaying behavior similar to the Pygmy Cupwing. Notably, it often moves with its wings raised, making its behavior quite distinctive.
– With the new Canon R1’s Continuous Pre-recording feature, every time the bird perches, I half-press the shutter to keep it in focus. As soon as the bird moves or raises its wings, I fully press the shutter, capturing everything that occurred 0.5 seconds prior. This ensures I never miss the perfect moment.
– only Montane of Borneo, and it may split as separate endemic species . a shy bird

The final tour of 2024 began on a high note, featuring eight stunning images of Borneo endemics. Thanks to the new Canon R1’s Continuous Pre-record feature, I seized the opportunity to capture the action at ISO 16000, including remarkable shots of this tiny and lively bird.

– last day, heard this bird calling loud and found it is quite tame to human !!! amazing it is almost a not possible to photograph … beautiful girl
Tiny, stumpy bird of dense undergrowth. Male is dark slate-blue with broad white eyebrows that give him the appearance of a furious little old man. Female is warm pale brown all over. In areas of overlap with Chinese and Lesser Shortwings, look out for the all-dark lower belly, which is white in those species. Inhabits hill and montane forest, where it forages in dense undergrowth, frequently in proximity to streams. Song is composed of high thin whistles with short bursts of clicking chattering mixed in.
While everyone was focused on a few main target birds, one of our buddies, who could be considered a new birder, suddenly shouted, “Shortwing!” He was so proud of himself for identifying a bird on his own. Honestly, I think he should be even happier if he managed to spot a rare bird feeding instead!
